When is the best time to book your Maternity Photoshoot?

Hey there, mama-to-be! Congratulations on your pregnancy journey! I’m so excited that you’re considering preserving these incredible moments with a maternity photoshoot. As a South Bay photographer who specializes in capturing these fleeting moments, I’ve guided many expecting parents through this process.

Let me tell you – there’s something truly magical about documenting your pregnancy. Those quiet moments of anticipation, the gentle curve of your growing belly, the glow that everyone talks about – these deserve to be preserved as art, not just pixels. I want them to become heirlooms, shared with family and friends, and woven into the fabric of your home.

But timing is everything when it comes to a maternity photoshoot! Let’s chat about when you should book your session to ensure we capture this special time perfectly.

The Perfect Timing for Your Maternity Photoshoot

So when should you actually have your maternity photos taken? The sweet spot is typically between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant. Why this window? Let me break it down for you:

By 28 weeks, your bump is beautifully defined and photogenic – definitely noticeable, but you’re still feeling relatively comfortable. Your skin has that gorgeous pregnancy glow, and you’re usually not dealing with the intense discomfort that can come in those final weeks.

At the same time, we don’t want to wait too long! After 36 weeks, many mamas start feeling extra tired, swelling might increase, and there’s always the possibility of an early arrival that could mean missing the opportunity altogether.

Every pregnancy is unique, though! If you’re carrying twins or multiples, we might aim for the earlier side of this window, around 26-28 weeks, since your bump will grow more quickly and your comfort levels might change sooner.

When to Actually BOOK Your Session

Here’s the thing many expectant parents don’t realize – when you should book your session is very different from when you should have your photos taken!

Here in the Bay Area, professional maternity photographers often book up months in advance, especially during the Bay Area’s gorgeous spring and fall seasons when the light is absolutely perfect at beaches and parks!

My recommendation? Reach out to book during your second trimester, ideally around 16-20 weeks. This gives us plenty of time to:

  • Secure your preferred date and time
  • Plan for the perfect location based on your vision
  • Discuss wardrobe options
  • Create a backup plan in case of unexpected weather or health concerns

If you’re reading this and thinking, “Oh no, I’m already past 20 weeks!” – don’t worry! Shoot me a message anyway. I try and accommodate last-minute maternity photoshoots whenever my schedule allows!

The Bay Area Advantage (and Considerations)

One of the amazing things about being pregnant in the South Bay is that we have picture-perfect locations year-round! But each season does offer something unique:

Spring (March-May): The hills around the South Bay turn this gorgeous shade of green, beautiful wildflowers bloom everywhere from lupines to mustard, and the light gets so dreamy and soft.

Summer (June-August): Those warm golden evenings are perfect for beach maternity sessions along the coast. May and June also bring the most beautiful blooming roses in the Bay Area, providing a beautiful backdrop for your pictures! The extended daylight hours give us more flexibility for scheduling too. Just keep in mind that weekends book up super quickly!

Fall (September-November): My personal favorite! The light is absolutely magical, temperatures are comfortable (nobody wants to be overheated when 7 months pregnant!), and the landscape offers beautiful warm tones.

Winter (December-February): Don’t dismiss winter sessions! While we might need to dodge rain showers, winter offers these incredible dramatic skies and the softest, most flattering light like this dreamy cloudy day maternity photoshoot at San Jose. End of February also brings the most whimsical dreamy almond blossom backdrop and I will not stop recommending these to mamas who are expecting their babies in April-May-June. It is THE most magical backdrop for your maternity photoshoot in February.

How Your Pregnancy Journey Affects Timing

When we’re planning your session, I always want to know how you’re feeling physically. Every pregnancy is different, right?

If you’re having a particularly tough time with physical symptoms, we might aim for the earlier side of that 28-34 week window. If you’re feeling great and want to maximize your bump size, we can push toward the later end.

Also consider:

  • Your energy levels
  • Any physical limitations we should plan around
  • Whether you want your other children or pets to be included in some of the photos
  • If you’re hoping to use the photos for your baby shower invitations (we’ll need to schedule earlier!)

What Happens If Plans Change?

Girl, this is pregnancy – of course plans might change! Your comfort and well-being always come first.

If you’re placed on bed rest, feeling unwell on your session day, or we’re dealing with unexpected weather (hello, Bay Area fog!), we can typically reschedule within that optimal window. This is actually another huge reason to book early – it gives us that flexibility to adjust as needed

Preparing for Your Maternity Photoshoot

Once your session is on the books, there are a few things to consider as your date approaches:

A pregnant mama looks at the distance holding her belly fondly surrounded by lavender flowers at a Bay Area garden

Wardrobe Planning: In our design consultation call, we’ll chat about your outfits. Whether you’re borrowing from my client closet, shopping for something special, or working with what you have, I’ll guide you toward options that photograph beautifully and make you feel amazing.

Beauty Appointments: Many mamas like to schedule a hair appointment, manicure, or even a prenatal massage before their session. If that sounds like you, book those appointments 1-2 days before our session.

Rest Up: The night before your session, try to get some extra rest. I know that might sound impossible with pregnancy insomnia and midnight bathroom trips, but even relaxing with your feet up can help you feel more comfortable during our time together.

Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your session will help your skin glow and keep you feeling your best.

After Your Maternity Photoshoot

After we capture those beautiful maternity images, we’ll meet virtually for the gallery reveal session to view your stunning images together. Together, we’ll choose your favorite photos and design your custom wall art and albums that reflect your family’s unique story and style. In just a few weeks, your heirloom-quality artwork will arrive at your doorstep, ready to be displayed and cherished in your home for years to come along with your digital files!

Many of my clients incorporate the photos from the maternity photoshoot into nursery decor, coffee table albums or display them alongside newborn images once the baby arrives. These photos are the beginning of your family’s visual story – the chapter where you’re falling in love with your little one before you’ve even met face to face.

Let’s Make This Happen!

I hope this helps you understand when to book your maternity session for the most beautiful results! Remember that while 28-34 weeks is typically ideal for the actual photos, reaching out around 16-20 weeks to book is your best bet, especially here in our gorgeous but busy South Bay area.

Every mama deserves to have this special time captured beautifully. Pregnancy transforms us in so many ways – not just physically, but emotionally too. These photos celebrate that transformation and the incredible journey you’re on.

I’d love to chat more about creating your perfect maternity photoshoot! Drop me a message, and let’s start planning this celebration of your journey to motherhood. Whether you’re envisioning dreamy sunset beach photos, candid portraits with roses or wildflowers, or something uniquely you, I’m here to make that vision come to life.

Can’t wait to hear from you, mama!
