Looking for a meaningful Father’s Day gift that won’t end up forgotten in a drawer? Professional photos capturing dad with his children create lasting memories that only grow more precious with time. This Father’s Day, give a gift that appreciates in value: authentic moments that tell your family’s unique story!
Father’s Day is approaching, and I’ve been thinking about how we celebrate the dads in our lives. Sure, there’s always the classic tie, the “World’s Best Dad” mug, or the latest gadget as a father’s day gift. But as a photographer capturing family memories across the Bay Area, I’ve witnessed the transformation that happens when dads – often reluctant, sometimes awkward – step in front of my camera with their children.
Let’s be honest – most dads aren’t exactly rushing to book family photo sessions. While moms recognize the importance of preserving these moments, dads often need a little more convincing.
I can’t count how many times I’ve heard:
“I’m not photogenic.“
“Do I have to pose?”
Also “How long will this take?” 😀
Is it almost a universal dad trait to be camera-shy? Or perhaps they simply don’t see themselves as central to the family photo narrative. But the dads who protest the most often end up treasuring these images the most deeply.
Think about this: your daughter is four now, twirling in her favorite dress as her dad lifts her high in the air, both of them laughing. It seems like this stage will last forever. But in a blink, he’ll be sharing that daddy-daughter dance at her wedding, both of them remembering when she was small enough to dance while standing on his shoes.
Or picture your toddler son, perched confidently on dad’s strong shoulders, tiny hands gripping his father’s forehead, giggling with the thrill of seeing the world from up high. Those shoulders that seem invincible to your child now are creating a sense of security that will shape him for years to come.
One of the gifts of raising a family in the Bay Area is the incredible diversity of locations that can become the setting for your family’s story. Be it a family photoshoot or just a father-child portrait session – Whether dad prefers the majestic redwoods, beaches at Santa Cruz, or a park or a garden at Palo Alto or San Jose, there’s a perfect backdrop that feels authentic to your family’s personality and journey.
You don’t need a wall-sized portrait to make these memories matter (though they do look amazing!). Some of the most meaningful Father’s Day gifts I’ve helped create have been:
Small Albums That Tell Big Stories – A compact 4×4 or 6×6 album that fits in his desk drawer, filled with genuine moments rather than posed perfection.
A tabletop print – A single framed 5×7 for his workspace showing a moment of connection with his child. Something that grounds him throughout the day.
Unlike almost any other gift you could give, professional family photographs appreciate in value. That Father’s Day session might seem like a nice gift this June, but by next Father’s Day, it will have transformed into something more precious – a moment you can no longer return to, preserved exactly as it was. Be it your toddler’s chubby cheeks that disappear now that they are a 7-year old or photos with three generations of Dads! I have had Dads tell me after the sessions – “I avoided family photos because I thought they were for my wife, not for me, I didn’t realize I needed them too.”
This Father’s Day, I’m not suggesting a photo session as another item to check off your gift list. I’m inviting you to consider giving something that acknowledges the journey of fatherhood – with all its ordinary magic, its challenges, and its immeasurable value.
One of my favorite parts of any family session is capturing those one-on-one moments between each parent and child. These candid interactions often become the most treasured images in the collection
For the dad who doesn’t think he needs professional photos, who insists he’s not photogenic – he deserves his story with his children documented, to one day look back and remember exactly how it felt when small hands reached for him.
If you’re considering capturing these moments with the father in your life, I’d love to help create images that feel authentic to your family’s unique story here in our beautiful Bay Area. Not just photos, but tangible memories of the love that built your family – one ordinary, extraordinary day at a time.
